Skylights are the most neglected glass on any house, for the obvious reason that nobody sees them until they're bad. Facing straight up, they collect everything: needles, moss spores, roof grit, algae film, and the mineral residue left every time rainwater evaporates off them. In a climate this wet, an untouched skylight can lose most of its light transmission in a few years.
Hard water staining is the related problem. When sprinkler overspray, roof runoff or irrigation hits glass and dries, it leaves dissolved minerals behind. Do that a few hundred times and the deposit bonds into the surface of the glass. At that point normal cleaning does nothing — it needs a restoration process, and if it's left long enough it etches permanently.
Fresh mineral deposit lifts with the right restoration compound and a lot of patience. This is a slow, hands-on job rather than a quick wash, and it's priced accordingly.
Once minerals have etched into the glass surface, no amount of work brings it back — the glass itself is pitted. We'll tell you straight if that's what we're looking at instead of charging you for a job that can't succeed.
Hard water removal is included at no charge on the Quarterly and Monthly maintenance plans, which is largely the point of them: staying ahead of the problem costs far less than fixing it.
If you have staining on one side of the house only, it's almost always irrigation overspray. Adjusting the heads away from the glass is free and stops it recurring.
